Construction Class Schedule

This workshop is for staff who conduct periodic housing inspections.  Maintaining the interior and exterior of any facility is the single most important component for successful facility maintenance management, and the first line of defense toward that maintenance is - The Inspection!  A proper housing or quarters inspection gives the clearest overall picture of the true condition of a property, and it indicates what preventive maintenance and repairs are necessary.

Maintaining quarters and avoiding costly repairs requires a modest and consistent investment in time and materials, along with a working knowledge of how to do proper, effective inspections.  This workshop will assist facilities in training maintenance staff in the extremely important area of inspection.  Participants will learn how to conduct  a proper inspection, as well as to recommend appropriate repairs.  The format of this training session involves an informal, but extensive group exchange between the participants and the workshop leader regarding the agenda topics.

Prevention of even a single major accident is worth developing safe practices for staff members to follow.

This workshop has been developed to assist Supervisors and Staff Members of Facility Maintenance Departments to increase overall safety, reduce on-the-job injuries, and improve security at their organizations.  This is a workshop pertaining to building security and workplace safety. "Safety on the job" is critical for an organization and its employees, and effective safety programs and practices are essential for maintaining workplace safety.

Because effective security measures can save money in the maintenance budget by minimizing theft and vandalism, the workshop will emphasize how to improve building and ground security. Preventive maintenance measures that can substantially improve safety will also be presented.

A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP!

You need to be able to read blueprints and understand specifications if:

• You are building new housing and commercial structures

• You are renovating existing houses and commercial buildings

• When you have to review plans before solving maintenance problems

• Trying to discuss new construction and/or renovation with architects, engineers, and contractors can be extremely frustrating, if you don’t have a basic understanding of blueprints or contract specifications.

Housing program staff members are often faced with the task of estimating and/or checking costs for construction or renovation of housing. It is essential to know that costs are reasonable and accurate when doing your own cost estimates, and when receiving estimates from contractors and subcontractors for bids on renovation, or new construction. Accurate cost-estimating, and understanding construction documents are essential in order to develop a budget for a project or individual renovation.
